Ironically-Named ‘Smart Meters’ Prove to Be a Dumb Idea

Ironically-Named ‘Smart Meters’ Prove to Be a Dumb Idea

Headaches, insomnia, tinnitus, DNA breakdown. . . These are just a few of the myriad problems mentioned when people talk about the constant bombardment of EMFs or electromagnetic frequencies, a huge by-product of the new Smart Meters being installed by public utilities around the country.

But wait! We have been told that the Smart Grid, with it’s Smart Meters would be a good thing for all of us. Now we find out that this scheme poses very real dangers to human health?

Information on the effect of installing millions of Smart Meters, all equipped with wireless transmitters that are constantly filling the environment with EMFs, is just starting to trickle in. An electrical engineer named Rob States has been looking into this problem:

“Since individuals with no history of RF disease are experiencing symptoms the first day the meter is installed, we can assume the meter’s RF emissions are not the only problem. The RF network is activated months after initial meter installation. Extensive measurements have demonstrated that all of the meters measured so far, including ABB, GE, and Landis Gyr, emit noise on the customer’s electric wiring in the form of high frequency voltage spikes, typically with an amplitude of 2 volts, but a frequency any ware from 4,000 Hertz, up to 60,000 Hz. The actual frequency of the phenomena is influenced by the devices that are plugged into the customer’s power. Some houses are much worse than others, and this observation has been confirmed by PG&E installers that have talked to us.”

Rob’s comments come from an online article posted by Stop Smart Meters.

Thanks to the work of people like Stop Smart Meters, communities are waking up to the problem. Especially in California.

Generally speaking, people in California seem to accept new government programs with open arms, especially anything with the words ‘green’ or ‘smart’ attached to it. So Smart Meters seemed to be a no-brainer as they promised to make the planet greener and who doesn’t want a smart electrical meter?

You should know that the so-called Smart Meters are the typical energy monitoring devices with a little extra bonus added. It is a wireless transmitter (think cell phone) that is constantly sending the power company updates on your electrical use. The meters are now bombarding the environment with EMFs, all day, every day. That electronic carpet-bombing of your home, apartment complex, subdivision is being blamed for health problems in people who are ‘electrically hypersensitive.’ (a real term)

The argument that Smart Meters will lower energy consumption has also been debunked. Reuters published a piece showing no real long-term savings in homes with Smart Meters vs the old meters.

“Participants who kept the monitor (…) did not manage to sustain their electricity savings any better than those without a monitor.”

“A second finding is that certain groups of people seem more receptive to energy-saving interventions than others. A ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach for home energy monitors cannot be justified.”

No real savings, potential health problems. . . so why the rush to install these so called Smart Meters in 200 million homes?

Some skeptics claim the new meters will allow government access to more information and control over individuals. From our new friends at StopSmartMeters.org:

Do you value civil liberties and the right to privacy? When a ‘smart’ meter is installed, your utility has access to a treasure trove of information about you- when you wake up in the morning, when you go on vacation, what kinds of appliances you are using, etc. They will be able to sell this information to a series of corporations and the government.

YES, the words ‘Big Brother’ definitely come to mind here.

Oddly enough, California may be leading the charge against Smart Meters. There are almost 30 local governments formally opposing the installation of the Smart Meters. Two weeks ago the tide started turning:

The anti-Smart Meter people actually scored a victory of sorts against this governmental invasion as news broke yesterday that PG&E offered an ‘opt-out’ program, but it is going to cost you. Early estimates say that choosing the old meter will cost an additional $14-$20 per month, plus a ‘set-up’ fee.

Let’s review what we know about Smart Meters:

European studies have shown no significant energy savings.

Great potential exists for serious and wide-spread health problems caused by constant bombardment of EMFs.

Loss of personal freedom to consume energy as you see fit is inherent in this kind of metering.

Government now has access to even more information about how you live, with the potential to interfere in your life via control of power.

And, if you choose NOT to have a Smart Meter, you will pay a ‘tax’ for the right to retain your privacy and freedom of choice.

Any questions?

Former Klansman Seeks Political Office in Florida…as a Democrat

John Paul Rogers, a 70-year old Floridian, wants to run for mayor of a small Florida town called Lake Wales. Just one problem: the democratic mayoral candidate is a former Klansman.

Here he is at a 1977 KKK rally in Tallahassee:

Not only was Rogers a Klansman, but he was a leader in the United Klans of America, which was arguably the most violent of the Klan organizations says Florida local and Klan history expert Darryl Paulson:

Paulson, a USF professor, who is an expert in the Klan, points to a case in which two Klansman with the United Klans of America were convicted of attacking 19-year-old Michael Donald in 1981 in Mobile, Alabama. Donald was beaten up and his throat was cut.

Paulson says, “They hung him from a tree and they were sued in court and the civil judgment was launched against the United Klans of America. The jury awarded a six million dollar settlement to the mother of the slain child.”

He adds, “When Rogers says he resigned. He had no other choice. The United Klans couldn’t pay off the six million dollar settlement but they lost their headquarters. Their headquarters was sold as part of the judgement so in essence they were forced out of business. They were financially bankrupt.”

According to a local news station in Tampa Bay, Rogers has no apologies about his time with the KKK.

Rogers told WTSP’s 10 News, “Well I resigned years ago, about 30 years ago. Jesus said, ‘He who is without sin, let him cast the first stone,‘ and so far no one’s hit me with a rock. I don’t know of any act of any violence that was sanctioned by our organization, either national or in Florida.”

Will Lake Wales voters elect a former KKK leader to be their mayor? We’ll find out on April 5, election day.

Local coverage and an interview with Rogers appears below (H/T Gateway Pundit).

Libyan Rebels Regain Key City After Airstrikes

AJDABIYA, Libya (AP) – Libyan rebels regained control of the eastern gateway city of Ajdabiya on Saturday after international airstrikes crippled Moammar Gadhafi’s forces, in the first major turnaround for an uprising that once appeared on the verge of defeat. In a western city the opposition lost to Gadhafi, a resident said security agents had lists of rebel sympathizers and were dragging them from their homes.

Drivers honked in celebration and flew the tricolor rebel flag. Others in the city fired their guns into the air and danced on burned-out tanks that littered the road. Inside a building that had served as makeshift barracks for pro-Gadhafi forces, hastily discarded uniforms were piled on the floor.

“Without the planes we couldn’t have done this. Gadhafi’s weapons are at a different level than ours,” said Ahmed Faraj, 38, a rebel fighter from Ajdabiya. “With the help of the planes we are going to push onward to Tripoli, God willing.”

Ajdabiya‘s sudden fall to Gadhafi’s troops spurred the swift U.N. resolution authorizing international action in Libya, and its return to rebel hands on Saturday came after a week of airstrikes and missiles against the Libyan leader’s military.

Saif Sadawi, a 20-year-old rebel fighter with an RPG in his hands, said the city’s eastern gate fell late Friday and the western gate fell at dawn Saturday after airstrikes on both locations.

AP

“All of Ajdabiya is free,” he said.

The U.N. Security Council authorized the operation to protect Libyan civilians after Gadhafi launched attacks against anti-government protesters who demanded that he step down after 42 years in power. The airstrikes have sapped the strength of Gadhafi’s forces, but rebel advances have also foundered, and the two sides have been at stalemate in key cities.

Earlier Friday, British and French warplanes hit near Ajdabiya, destroying an artillery battery and armored vehicles. Ajdabiya, the gateway to the opposition’s eastern stronghold, and the western city of Misrata have especially suffered because the rebels lack the heavy weapons to lift Gadhafi’s siege.

On Saturday, rebels in Ajdabiya hauled away a captured rocket launcher and a dozen boxes of anti-aircraft ammunition, adding to their limited firepower.

On Friday, the U.S. commander in charge of the overall international mission, Army Gen. Carter Ham, told The Associated Press, “We could easily destroy all the regime forces that are in Ajdabiya,” but the city itself would be destroyed in the process. “We‘d be killing the very people that we’re charged with protecting.”

Instead, the focus was on disrupting the communications and supply lines that allow Gadhafi’s forces to keep fighting in Ajdabiya and other urban areas like Misrata, Ham said in a telephone interview from his U.S. Africa Command headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany.

The turnaround in Ajdabiya is a boost for President Barack Obama, who has faced complaints from lawmakers from both parties that he has not sought their input about the U.S. role in the war or explained with enough clarity about the U.S. goals and exit strategy. Obama was expected to give a speech to the nation Monday.

“The United States should not and cannot intervene every time there’s a crisis somewhere in the world,” Obama said in a radio and Internet address Saturday. But with Gadhafi threatening “a bloodbath that could destabilize an entire region … it’s in our national interest to act. And it’s our responsibility. This is one of those times.”

Protecting civilians from Gadhafi’s forces has been the stated mission of the international action since the beginning, although some countries have offered variations on that theme at times.

A resident of Zwara, a former rebel holding in the west, said the regime has the town firmly in its grip again. He said pro-Gadhafi forces are dragging away people there and in the town of Zawiya who participated in protests that began Feb. 15 and were inspired by the uprisings that toppled autocratic leaders in Egypt and Tunisia.

“They have lists of demonstrators and videos and so on and they are seeking them out. We are all staying home and waiting for this to be over,” said the resident, who did not want to be named because he feared for his safety if discovered. He said a friend who helped coordinate checkpoints when the opposition held the city was taken away Friday.

“They came with four or five cars with four people in each one, all of them armed to the teeth with Kalashnikovs. They surrounded the house and took him out,” he said, adding that the whole thing was seen by a common friend.

He said neighbors now fear each other.

“During the demonstrations, many people contributed to the community, doing anything they could. This shows that the regime has collaborators to give them names. It’s a Big Brother type of show, so they can come in and take whomever they want.”

___

Hubbard contributed from Cairo.

Guess Which Company Paid $0 in Taxes (on $14.2 Billion in Profits)? Hint: Its CE

Half of all Americans don’t pay federal taxes on their income. And neither, apparently, does General Electric, the multi-national company that reaped $14.2 billion in profits last year. Though G.E. is the largest corporation in the U.S., it did not have to pay a dime in U.S. taxes, according to the New York Times. In fact, the company claimed $3.2 billion in tax benefits.

That may be hard to fathom for the millions of American business owners and households now preparing their own returns, but low taxes are nothing new for G.E. The company has been cutting the percentage of its American profits paid to the Internal Revenue Service for years, resulting in a far lower rate than at most multinational companies.

Its extraordinary success is based on an aggressive strategy that mixes fierce lobbying for tax breaks and innovative accounting that enables it to concentrate its profits offshore. G.E.’s giant tax department, led by a bow-tied former Treasury official named John Samuels, is often referred to as the world’s best tax law firm. Indeed, the company’s slogan “Imagination at Work” fits this department well. The team includes former officials not just from the Treasury, but also from the I.R.S. and virtually all the tax-writing committees in Congress.

According to the Times, “one of the most striking advantages of General Electric is its ability to lobby for, win and take advantage of tax breaks.”

These tax breaks are incredibly important to G.E.–so important that G.E.’s head tax man got down on his knees and begged Rep. Charles Rangel to let a particularly lucrative one extend past its expiration date in 2008:

Gun shop owners and whistle-blowing agents with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) recently announced their concerns with a controversial government program which allows the smuggling of U.S. weapons across the nation’s southern border. In response, the Obama administration is now denying having any knowledge of the operation.

Dubbed “Project Gunrunner,” the ATF says the mission is designed to “deny firearms, the ‘tools of the trade,’ to criminal organizations in Mexico and along the border.” But the operation‘s critics say it’s doing exactly the opposite, allegedly facilitating the delivery of thousands of guns into criminal hands.

CBS News broke the initial story last month.

In late 2009, ATF was alerted to suspicious buys at seven gun shops in the Phoenix area. Suspicious because the buyers paid cash, sometimes brought in paper bags. And they purchased classic “weapons of choice” used by Mexican drug traffickers – semi-automatic versions of military type rifles and pistols. Sources tell CBS News several gun shops wanted to stop the questionable sales, but ATF encouraged them to continue.

So-called “suspicious buyers” purchasing huge quantities of weapons for “personal use” were logged into an ATF suspect database over the following year. Most all of the weapons were allowed to “walk” so ATF could gather intelligence and see where the guns eventually ended up. Unfortunately for many, the guns often ended up at crime scenes along with dead bodies.

One agent called the strategy “insane.” Another said: “We were fully aware the guns would probably be moved across the border to drug cartels where they could be used to kill.”

On the phone, one Project Gunrunner source (who didn’t want to be identified) told us just how many guns flooded the black market under ATF’s watchful eye. “The numbers are over 2,500 on that case by the way. That’s how many guns were sold – including some 50-calibers they let walk.”

50-caliber weapons are fearsome. For months, ATF agents followed 50-caliber Barrett rifles and other guns believed headed for the Mexican border, but were ordered to let them go. One distraught agent was often overheard on ATF radios begging and pleading to be allowed to intercept transports. The answer: “Negative. Stand down.”

CBS News has been told at least 11 ATF agents and senior managers voiced fierce opposition to the strategy. “It got ugly…” said one. There was “screaming and yelling” says another. A third warned: “this is crazy, somebody is gonna [get] killed.”

Sources within the ATF told CBS News that dozens of tracked weapons turned up in shootouts with government agents. One unidentified agent reportedly argued with his superior over the controversial and dangerous policy asking, “Are you prepared to go to the funeral of a federal officer killed with one of these guns?” Another agent noted that every time there was a report of shooting near the border, “we would all hold our breath, hoping it wasn‘t one of ’our’ guns.”

When U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was gunned down last December, serial numbers on two assault rifles found at the scene matched weapons the ATF had allowed a “suspicious buyer” to purchase.

A Washington Post investigation last December linked 115 firearms confiscated over the past two years by Mexican authorities to Carter’s Country gun outlets. But the shops’ attorney says the sales were made at the express insistence of the ATF. As a result, a federal grand jury reportedly launched an investigation of the chain.

“Let me tell you something about Carter’s Country. They have been cooperating with ATF from the get go,” says attorney Dick Deguerin who represents Carter’s Country owner, Bill Carter. “They were told to go through with what they considered to be questionable sales. They were told to go through with sales of three or more assault rifles at the same time or five or more 9 millimeter guns at the same time or a young Hispanic male paying in cash. It’s all profiling, but they went through with it… They reported them promptly, either while the transaction was going on or soon thereafter. They did this for months and months and months. Went through with the sales because the ATF told them to go through with the sales,” he added.

According to Deguerin, the ATF asked Carter’s Country employees to follow some customers into the parking lot after completed sales to record license plate numbers. “If the ATF had used the information that Carter’s Country developed for them they could have stopped these guns from going across the border,” he insisted.

A spokesperson for ATF would neither confirm nor deny the co-operation agreement with Carter’s Country, but told the local Houston Fox affiliate, “I don’t think we would issue a blanket directive.” In the meantime, Deguerin says his client — the gun shop owners — are feeling unjustly vilified.

Now under increasing fire for the controversial operation, the Obama administration is denying having authorized the mission. During an interview with Univision this week, President Obama said neither he nor Attorney General Eric Holder knew of the operation, now called “Operation Fast and Furious.”

Responding to reports that the Mexican government has complained that it told about the U.S. operation that allowed guns to illegally cross the international border, Obama said he didn’t inform Mexican President Felipe Calderon because he — the president of the United States — wasn’t informed either.

Ditching the old presidential moniker “The Buck Stops Here,” Obama responded that the U.S. government “a pretty big government” with “a lot of moving parts”:

Although Attorney General Holder denies having authorized the controversial program, the Inspector General‘s investigation into the program began after the smuggled weapons were found at the scene of Agent Brian Terry’s murder. Since then, at least one gun smuggled from the U.S. was used to kill Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Agent Jamie Zapata, but it has not been determined if it was part of “Fast and Furious.”

“Letting guns ‘walk’ is not something that is acceptable,” Holder told a Senate Appropriations Subcommittee hearing this week. “Guns are different than drugs or money when we are trying to follow their trail. That is not acceptable.”

The death of Agent Zapata also raised questions about the safety of American agents operating south of the border. According to reports at the time, Zapata and his colleague were pinned down by known drug smugglers, but were unable to retaliate because U.S. agents are not allowed to carry firearms on Mexican soil. If the ATF is indeed allowing Americans guns to be smuggled into Mexico, shouldn’t American agents at least be armed?

Former Arizona governor and acting Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano — who has previously insisted America’s southern border is more secure than ever — has also denied prior knowledge of the “Fast and Furious” operation:

The Obama administration has previously blamed U.S. guns for Mexican drug violence and called on Congress to enact new more strict gun control measures. But with reports of ATF agents encouraging American gun retailers to be reckless with their sales, gun advocates worry politicians in Washington may be purposefully inflating the threat of cross-border gun violence to justify new gun regulations.

On Friday, NRA president Wayne LaPierre called into the Glenn Beck radio program to voice his organization’s concerns with the “Fast and Furious” operation and its potential impact on Americans’ right to bear arms:

In contrast, the George Soros-funded Center for American Progress (CAP) is claiming the NRA is using the “Fast and Furious” operation to discredit the ATF:

Congressional calls for investigation into “gun-runner“ operations like ”Fast and Furious” have gone unanswered by the Obama administration.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, initiated an investigation into the operations with a letter to the ATF dated Jan. 27, 2011. In it, Grassley notes his concerns about potential “careless” negligence in implementing the strategy.

Grassley then addressed a follow-up letter to Attorney General Holder dated March 3. Despite the DOJ’s insistence that ATF would never “knowingly allow weapons to fall into the hands of criminals, or let firearms ‘walk’ in an operation,” Grassley said mounting evidence supported whistleblower allegations.

In addition, Grassley’s letter stated that ATF agents had been threatened and warned against speaking out against the policy. “If you don’t think this is fun, you’re in the wrong line of work– period!” one ATF supervisor’s email read. “This is the pinnacle of domestic U.S. law enforcement techniques. After this the toolbox is empty. Maybe the Maricopa County Jail is hiring detention officers and you can get paid $30,000 (instead of $100,000) to serve lunch to inmates all day.”

Two weeks later, the same supervisor wrote to senior Justice officials, reiterating his support for the controversial strategy, but noting that increasing levels of violence demanded more urgent action:

Our subjects purchased 359 firearms during the month of March alone, to include numerous Barrett .50 caliber rifles. I believe we are righteous in our plan to dismantle this entire organization and to rush in to arrest any one person without taking in to [sic] account the entire scope of the conspiracy would be ill advised to the overall good of the mission.

“Dismantling the Mexican drug cartels is a worthy goal. However, asking cooperating gun dealers to arm cartels and bandits without control of the weapons or knowledge of their whereabouts is an extremely risky strategy,” Grassley wrote. “These documents establish that ATF allowed illegal firearm purchases by suspected traffickers in hopes of making a larger case against the cartels. ATF was not alone. The U.S. Attorney”s office appears to have been fully aware and engaged in endorsing the same strategy. Congress needs to get to the bottom of this.”

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee chairman Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., is also reportedly pursuing answers and has assembled his own investigatory team. In a letter addressed to Kenneth Melson, acting director of the ATF, Issa urged decisive action to “assuage the public’s deep suspicions.”

“Recent media reports have raised grave questions about your department’s handling of operations involving gun trafficking in Mexico,” the letter begins. “In the aftermath of the tragic killing of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry and Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agent Jamie Zapata, it is imperative that you act decisively to assuage the public’s deep suspicions that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has a policy permitting – and even encouraging – the movement of guns into Mexico by straw purchasers.”

Kids, do NOT try this at home! As a prank, French comedian Remi Gaillard decided to create something of a real-life version of the classic Nintendo video game Mario Kart.

Driving a go-kart at high speeds through the streets and stores of Paris, He was lucky no one was hurt (apart from the likely bruised egos of security guards that gave chase). This was not Gaillard's first time employing Mario Kart in one of his pranks--he mounted a similar stunt back in 2008.

Google released two new versions of Chrome yesterday, version 10 for beta users and version 11 for developers willing to put up with more instability.

With Google's six-week update schedule, the new releases are milestones that Chrome users pass--often not necessarily noticing given the software's silent auto-update mechanism. But there are significant new features coming with the new beta.

Top on Google's list is faster JavaScript with the "Crankshaft" version of the new V8 JavaScript engine. JavaScript runs increasingly sophisticated Web-based applications such as Google Docs, and this highly competitive aspect of browser performance has become even more so with the "Chakra" engine in the forthcoming IE9 from Microsoft.

Crankshaft leaps ahead 65 percent on Google's own V8

Today marks an important milestone for Windows 7: the arrival of its first service pack since the operating system's release in late 2009.

Service Pack 1 was released to manufacturers earlier this month, with the announcement that it would arrive in consumers' hands this week. The software is set to hit Windows Update later today, with it already being posted as a 1.95GB download bundle for all versions on Microsoft's Download Center. TechNet subscribers and Microsoft volume license customers got access to the update last week.
North Carolina Economy Moves From Textiles to Tech

By Jonathan Serrie

The foothills of North Carolina are famous for furniture and textiles. But as jobs in those industries moved overseas, local leaders worried about too many closed factories and skyrocketing unemployment.

“We have been as high this year as 17.9 percent,” said Tom Johnson of the Economic Development Commission of North Carolina’s Rutherford County. “A lot of that, of course, is attributable to textile operations closing.”

So, Rutherford County, and other small communities in the foothills of North Carolina, banked on a high-tech future. They started luring companies such as Apple, Google and Facebook to build massive computer data centers. Such facilities require plenty of electricity and extensive cooling systems.

With the region’s history of manufacturing, much of the power and water infrastructure is already in place. In fact, Facebook is building a new data farm right on the property of an old textile mill near Forest City, N.C.

“What we recognized in North Carolina is that it has an abundance of power,” said Peter Marin, president of T5 Partners, a company that develops data centers. “It has nuclear power. It has a pro-business environment.”
