I think its just best to download the game on steam and install it... But otherwise you have to run the installer in compatibility mode for XP.

I downloaded steam and the single game worked fine but the multiplayer was a black screen of death. The web has multiple postings about this but no solution. Is there anything that can be done. Would one of the game sets work?

Go into your COD2 steam folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Call of Duty 2). Right click on the Multiplayer .exe file and click properties. On the window that comes up click the "Compatibility" tab. Make sure it is set to run is set to in compatibility mode fore Windows XP SP3. It may also have to be set to run as Administrator but I'm not sure on that. Try to run the game and see if you get a different result.

If that fails try this...

1. Go to steam main folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam
2. Find a file called Steam.dll, right click and copy
3. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Call of Duty 2
4. Right click and paste

Let me know how you make out...

That fix normally solves the can't find steam error

Have you tried the mic fixes?
Have you tried the mp config fix?
Have you tried waiting quite a while?

If you're not familiar with this holla. Not sure what you've already tried.

I've set the compatibility and moved the steam .dll and now I get a portion of an enlarged screanshot at a reduced screen resolution which freezes the computer.

8.1 Windows can be updated free, to 10.
Never heard of moving dll`s, adding maybe, not moving..
Set compatibility for admin status for steam
set compatibility right click on game icon itself for admin for all and for win xp 2
make sure you have a jack in the mic slot any 3.5 jack doesn't have to be a mic
Don't know if it was fixed ,but I didn't see a finding on it..
